Raspberry "Elegant" - Rubus idaeus.
The berries are incredibly aromatic, sweet, with a refreshing flavor, bright red in color, beautifully rounded, and very large: weighing 4.5-5.0 g.
It is a perennial, early-fruiting shrub reaching a height of 1.9-2.0 m from the Rosaceae family. It features annual and biennial above-ground shoots, a robust perennial rhizome, and adventitious roots. Botanically, the fruit is an aggregate of drupelets (commonly referred to simply as a berry).
Interestingly, even novice gardeners can easily grow healthy raspberries from seeds! Growing from seed is the best way to obtain many strong plants at once. These seedlings adapt much better to your local climatic conditions, establish themselves more easily, and are inherently free from viral diseases. The productivity of one mature bush is about 2-3 kg.
The raspberry blooms during a safe period — right after the danger of spring frosts has passed. Fruiting begins a month after the start of flowering and lasts for about 30 days.
It is a sun-loving plant that prefers fertile, moderately moist soils protected from cold winds. Raspberries cannot tolerate waterlogged areas; the groundwater level should be no higher than 1.5 m from the surface.
Ripe raspberries are magnificent eaten fresh, and they can also be frozen or dried. They are widely used in culinary preparations, making fantastic homemade jams, thick preserves, and aromatic homemade tinctures and liqueurs.
In addition, medicinal infusions made from raspberry flowers, berries, and leaves improve stomach and bowel function, while providing a mild antiseptic, diaphoretic, antipyretic, and pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.
Cultivation guide.
Before sowing, the seeds must be stratified (cold-treated) in damp sand at a temperature of +2ºC for 3-4 months, gently moistening the substrate from time to time.
In the spring, sow the prepared seeds together with the sand into garden beds or seedling boxes at a depth of 0.5 cm. An ideal substrate is a light mixture of finely chopped coconut fiber and well-fertilized garden soil (1:1).
Seedlings usually emerge unevenly, which is completely normal. Prick out the seedlings to their permanent location when they reach the 2 true leaves stage. Young plants need nutrition: feed them 5-6 times a season with a high-quality complex fertilizer.
For the winter, young bushes can be covered, or you can simply ensure that an adequate snow cover forms over the planting area to protect them from frost. Full fruiting begins in the second year.
